Dissertation Design:
Is Graphic Design
a Morally Correct Industry?

As a graphic design student, I learnt how to communicate to audiences. A fundamental part of our work is the skill of persuasion. In order to attract clients or consumers for their employer, graphic designers are often required to emphasise the positive aspects of a subject, sometimes perhaps unjustifiably. Following these concerns, I chose to consider the moral value of graphic design for my dissertation. However, it occurred to me that as the discipline is so wide, it would be impossible for me to analyse the morality of the entire craft. Instead, I chose to focus on the moral value of branding and typography. 

The identity of the dissertation revolves around a star shape which was inspired by the neon stars people use as a cheap form of persuasion. As I discuss the origins of branding and its evolution, the design also combines the contemporary with the classic by referencing renaissance paintings, industrial revolution letterpress posters and neon signage.
