A cover design for ‘Goodnight Mr Tom’ by Michelle Magorian. 

I used digital illustration and collage techniques to communicate Willie’s two juxtaposing realities. The back page depicts derelict London, where Willie faced great danger from incoming German bombs. In complete contrast, the cover shows the idyllic English countryside to which he escapes.

I also used two similar forms to communicate Willie’s different experiences with relationships. His abusive mother is represented by the German plane and Willie and his new friends (Mr Tom, Sammy the dog) are represented by birds.
